8 die as explosion rocks Kaduna

KADUNA- Hours after northern leaders ended their two-day parley in Kaduna on how to ensure that peace reigns in the north, the city was thrown into mourning yesterday, following an explosion which killed at least eight persons including a pregnant woman and her two children and injuring several others.
The police authorities said the explosion which occurred at No.32 Ogbomosho Street, off Katsina Road, Ori-Akpata, at about 9:30 a.m. had resulted from a gas cylinder, but eyewitnesses categorically stated that the explosion occurred when two men riding on a motorbike tossed a bomb into the area. The spot is close to old Scala Cinema, Kaduna, which now houses spare part shops in the area mostly inhabited by non northerners. No one has claimed responsibility for it.

Judgements of the Court have lose value-NBA

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) called for an overhaul of the National Judicial Council (NJC). The body of lawyers also criticized the poor quality of decisions made by judges of courts of appeal and said the reform will pave the way for a judicial system more dynamic.
While making a case for the appointment of more lawyers in the judiciary, the association urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu recast NJC to enable him to make guidelines more dynamic the appointment of judges to each superior and Court of Appeal.

Jega requests N5bn for plastic voters’ cards …To spend N63.1m on refreshmen
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), Prof. Attahiru Jega on Tuesday
asked the Senate to approve the second N5 billion to the Commission for his laminated voter cards. This was coming just three weeks after he made a similar request for an additional N6.6 billion for the extension of voter registration.

Jonathan endorses N31b for 9 energy project


Minister of Finance, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, said yesterday that about N31 billion has been approved for the construction of nine power projects across the country, some of which have been completed. Speaking at the 27th meeting of the Convergence Council of Ministers and central bank governors of the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ) in Abuja, the minister, who was represented by Minister of Finance of the State, Hajia Yabawa Lawana Wabi, have also said to strengthen the country's democratic dispensation, the government has ratified the African Charter on the principle of the rule in Nigeria. To this end, the activities that allow free and fair elections in April 2011 are progressing satisfactorily.
