Saturday, February 26, 2011

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) called for an overhaul of the National Judicial Council (NJC). The body of lawyers also criticized the poor quality of decisions made by judges of courts of appeal and said the reform will pave the way for a judicial system more dynamic.
While making a case for the appointment of more lawyers in the judiciary, the association urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu recast NJC to enable him to make guidelines more dynamic the appointment of judges to each superior and Court of Appeal.
The president of the NBA, Joseph Daudu (SAN) made the call at the court session farewell in honor of a member of the end of the bench, Judge Phillip Nnaemeka-Agu, retired judge of the Supreme Court held in Abuja. According to him, "His Lordship, Justice Agu came to the bench of the bar and acquitted himself with distinction in all courts, he worked until the Supreme Court.
This shows that there is merit in the current case for a return to the practice whereby the Supreme Court and other appellate courts have been populated by legal practitioners appointed to the helm. Appointment to the superior court of appeal should not be considered as the promotion of judges or judges in the High Court. Indeed, the courts must have the best materials of the bar, the judiciary and academia. "
Daudu noted that: "Justice Agu distinguished himself as a man of great research and erudition. This brings us to the quality of its ruling today. Outside of the few good writers left in the system, many decisions today are hardly legible. That speaks volumes about the quality of the hand given to the judiciary today. There is also a reflection on the need to refine the procedure of appointment. "
He called the NCJ to reorganize the operation of the NJC and identify new trends and dynamics on the appointment of judges of each superior court of record in Nigeria adding that the release of judges where the weak, should be a matter of discipline calls Action by the NJC. The Attorney General of the Federation Adok (AGF) Bello (SAN) has assured that the current administration is committed to electoral reforms that would pave the way for free and fair election has been the bane of political development Nigeria.
